What's a Wiki?

A wiki (pronounced "wicky" or "weekee") is a website that allows any and every visitor to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows that content to be edited by any other user. After creating a user account, visitors can add information to any page on a wiki in addition to creating entirely new pages. Wikis vary in purpose, but their general goal is the documentation of a subject large enough to warrant collaboration between a large user base. The largest wiki in the world is the Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia which seeks to document all of human knowledge in the major languages of the world. SWG Wiki is much more modest in scope: we simply want to be the most useful and up-to-date resource on the Internet for Star Wars Galaxies.

This site runs on MediaWiki, one of many software programs that power wiki websites.

How Do I Contribute?

Not everyone has to add information to this website. Our primary goal is to help you find the information you need to enjoy your SWG experience. If, however, you enjoy writing and helping others, you may find personal value in helping expand this wiki.

The simplest way to contribute is to find an article you know a lot about and see if you can add anything to it. The easiest way to do this is to use the Search function on the left; enter a word or phrase relating to the subject you're looking for, and the wiki software will see if it can find an article for you. Choose an article and read it over, then decide if you can add anything. If so, great! Use the edit button at the top of the page and you'll enter "edit mode", where you'll see the text for the article and get a chance to edit it. Be sure to use the preview function before submitting your changes, and review our notes for editors, new user guide, and the official MediaWiki help page.

Miscellany

  • Everyone should read our new user guide before editing anything.
  • You can use our sandbox to try out wiki editing syntax without worrying about destroying an existing page.
  • Please, please, please review our site templates when making new pages. Always, always, always base new pages off an existing page with similar content!
  • Discussion pages can be used to leave notes for other editors about a particular article. When editing a discussion page, please end your comments with "--~~~~" (without the quotation marks). This will leave your name and the time of your edit at the end of your comment, like this: --Influenza 22:49, 25 Jun 2005 (CEST).
  • The recent changes special page tracks the 50 most recent changes to the wiki. Use it to see what your fellow authors are up to.
  • Similarly, the recent discussions page displays the 50 most recent edits to discussion pages. This is useful for keeping up with important discussions about the site.
  • Articles with pressing issues are listed on SWG Wiki:Request for comments. Everyone is encouraged to read the discussions there and contribute to coming up with solutions.
